Spain manages to 553 million euros in the first year of H2020

  • Spanish institutions involved in 943 r & d activities and lead 101 projects
  • It ranks as the fifth country which receives more funding from the UE28 after Germany, United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands

Spain has obtained 553,3 million euros in the first 73 posted calls for European research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020 (2014-2020). This figure represents 9.5% of the resources granted in competitive so far, which places Spain as the fifth recipient of aid from the UE28 after Germany (17.7%), United Kingdom (16.4%), France (11.6%) and the Netherlands (9.6%).

The Spanish institutions – universities, organizations and research centres, companies, technology centres or foundations – have secured funding to participate in r & d 943. In addition, 101 projects (15.7% of the UE28) will be led by Spanish institutions, something very beneficial because it allows higher returns and better strategic positioning to generate knowledge.

In the seventh framework programme (2007-2013), Spain, with a 8.3% return, stayed nearly compensate for its contribution to the Community budget (8.9%), occupying the sixth place of the UE28. And for the first time be led a large number of projects (10.5%).

The Secretary of State of r & d, Carmen Vela, pointed out that data from both programs «reflect the quality of the Spanish system of science, technology and innovation. Horizon 2020 had put us objective 9.5% return and 10.5% led projects; at the moment we meet note. Our curve of participation in Europe in recent years is clearly rising.» Candle recognized also the important role in these results the Centre for Industrial technological development (CDTI), the European Bureau and other agents and structures that work to enhance the Spanish presence in the European r & d programmes.

Areas

In health, an important area with a large endowment, Spain has gone from getting 5.5% of European funds from the seventh framework programme to the current 9% (€51 million); energy is still improving and is passed from 11% of the previous programme to current 13.1%, being the second country by return. In nanotechnology, materials and manufacturing (from 11.1% to 15.2%) or in space (from 8.1% to 11.2%) jump was also important. As for the SME instrument, very important in Horizon 2020, Spain appears as the second country for return (13.3%).

The European Research Council (ERC for its acronym in English) has also increased its aid to Spain. In 2014 the Spanish institutions managed 22 Starting Grants (by 14 of 2013) and 32 Consolidator Grants (by 20 of 2013). Missing include the Advanced Grants.

Entities

Spanish companies are still where more resources are brought from Europe, with 33% of the total, while the universities get 23.4%. In terms of the entities that more number of projects have been obtained, emphasizes the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), with 71 projects that leads 36, followed by the Foundation Tecnalia Research and Innovation, with 45 projects and 7 led, and the University Pompeu Fabra, 21 projects and led 13.
